Hacker
(1) Originally, a computer hobbyist with detailed technical knowledge. (2) A cracker. In recent years, this usage has become
the predominant one.
Hit
A single request for a Web page. Some servers also count each request for an image on a page as a separate hit, so this number is
not reliable for determining the number of visitors.
Home Page
1. The default page to which a browser goes when opened.
2. The first page that displays at a Web site.
HomeSite
A Web-authoring tool by Macromedia, which allows the creation of Web pages by writing HTML. This site was created with HomeSite.
Host
(1) The computer and software that operates as a Web server. (2) A company that provides such a service.
HTTP Tunneling
A method of Remote Data Access using the HTTP protocol in a method invisible to the browser.
Hypertext Markup Language
The language used to define the appearance and contents of a Web page. It is what the Web server sends to the browser.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol
The Internet protocol used for the browser to request a Web page from the server, and for the server to send it.
