Access Provider
A company that provides access to the Internet, historically through a Dial-up connection.
Acrobat Reader
A browser Plug-in that permits the display of PDF documents.
Active Server Pages
A server-side scripting technology for use on Microsoft Windows-based server platforms
running Internet Information Server. ASP is slower than other technologies such as PHP and generally considered less stable. Also, its functionality is
limited and often requires the addition of plug-in modules. However, ASP integrates well with other Microsoft technologies and may be
recommended if an application requires those technologies..
Active-X
A Microsoft technology that allows the building of component Objects that can
be used on Web pages, similar to Java Beans. However, Active-X controls as they are called are limited to Microsoft operating
systems.
Administration Page
A specialized Web Page, accessible only through a password, that allows you to make modifications to the content of your Web site.
Advertising
Making information about products and services publicly available.
Ajax
Shorthand for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, a term that describes the combination of certain technologies, centered around the DOM XMLHTTPRequest object for implementing Remote Data Access. Our RDA uses Ajax.
Aliasing
(1) A technique of allowing a Domain Name to actually link to a page on a different server. Also called Redirection. Aliasing is often used
to run several different Web sites from the same Host account. (2) A jagged appearance in curved and diagonal lines of
digital images that come from the fact the the images are composed of discrete Pixels. See Anti-aliasing.
ALICE
Or ACADEMA's Lite Internet Client Environment>, a system for allowing multiple Java windows of a Rich Internet Application to be positioned within a single web page.
Animated Graphics
Graphics that contain moving images.
Anti-aliasing
A technique of smoothing a digital image by modifying pixels adjacent to sharp edges so that the edges appear more smooth.
Apache
A commonly used suite of Web server software by The Apache Software Foundation. Apache is used on more Web servers than any other Web server software. This Web site is running from an Apache server.
Applet
A type of Object that can be inserted into a Web page. Applets often have the functionality of an entire computer program and are usually written in Java.
Application Service Provider
A company that rents or leases software, especially over the Internet.
Assumed Knowledge
Knowledge that one assumes as a basis for communication. Often, this is knowledge specific to an industry, of which the general
public is not aware. Frequently, companies build Web sites relying too heavily on assumed knowledge with the unfortunate result
that it is unintelligible to public. This site attempts to forestall some of that problem by providing this glossary.
Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line
A form of Digital Subscriber Line that that has slower upload speeds than download.
Audio-Video Interleave
A digital video format created by Microsoft that interleaves audio and video in alternate chucks. Commonly used for Web presentation.
Autoresponder
An application that performs some function when a user sends information to a Web site. Frequently, this action may consist of
an email message, but almost always inserts the information into a Database.
